Impulse Purchase….

It was indeed an impulse buy.  There was this wicker basket at the Garden Centre with some strange looking bulbs.  It was labelled ‘Elephant Ears’ and apart from the price tag there was a short instruction to plant in the ground, or planter, leaving a third of the bulb above ground.  

So as I had some pocket money left….  I gave in  to temptation and bought one.

Then it was a waiting game, I nearly gave up hope.  For several long months nothing, then suddenly long strap like leaves appeared at the base.  Then nothing till last week.  Was that IT!  Then overnight a long tubular stem shot up. Then magically the flowers above in a clusters.

Is it really called Elephant Ears ??  Well I quick shot on Google Lens and the following names were revealed, so take your pick…….

Powell ‘s Swamp Lily

Cape Lily

and finally Elephant Flower

 

Now I just have to store the bulb till next Spring…. and maybe buy a couple more.  🙂
