Flippant Friday……. Lockdown Fatigue

Just another Lockdown Day

One day we will all be able to get out in the Great Outdoors again…..  at least we have each others company, not everyone is so lucky.

Until then…..

Silent Sunday (2)…… Boring!

When are we going Walkies

Trying to have a relaxing quiet Sunday…. and that doesn’t meet with Buster approval one little bit.

If I lie here long enough, give the occasional sigh and a soulful whimper, may be the boss will  remember its Walkies Time… ”

I always remind him to…..

The Second Day of Christmastide…

Christmas Roses

A Christmas Posey of Hellebore’s*

Today, the 26th December is also know as Boxing Day and also Saint Stephens Day.  Saint Stephen is remembered as the Saint that was stoned to death in 36ad.  But Boxing Day is a tradition that by comparison is much more recent.

So what is Boxing Day.  Well its is a Christian tradition.  This is the day that Gifts were given to the poor.  Boxes of gifts were distributed to those less well off.  It is also said that it referred to a box that was passed round in Church and elsewhere for dotation’s of Money that was later distributed to others.

I find it rather sad, that now a days, Boxing Day has been hijacked into a Shopping Holiday, Retail Therapy.

As for me, well Boxing Day is a day to relax, a good walk if the weather is favourable.

But Boxing Day 2020 is very different for all of us.  The family “Get Togethers” are via zoom, but only if we are connected via the ether.  A wave to the neighbours as they pass by.  Certainly no Parties.  No doubt those relaxing thoughts will drift to concerns about the future and our families welfare.

It has been inspiring to see and hear of the many good deed’s that ordinary people, often strangers have done for others during these troubles times.

I also hope and trust that our concerns for those that are less fortunate can continue well into the future.

Tough times but more important than ever to…..

  • The Hellebore’s were collected, from our garden, last January.  They are commonly known as Christmas Roses, though we have never had them in flower at Christmas…..  in fact January was rather early for us.  This years the buds are already swollen, so again looks like a January flowering

The Lamp Room……. A sign of the Times

The Lamp Room

The Lamp Room….

There was a time when the Lamp Room was one of the most important rooms in our large Town and Country Houses.  The heart of those houses was debatably the Kitchens, but like all the other rooms, from Bedroom the Ballroom, Lounge to Library, Nursery to Games Room…. all needed light when the days became darker.  A light switch and electricity were not an option.

So, you can understand why the Lamp Room was so important.  In this room a member of staff was responsible for cleaning the lamps, trimming the wicks, filling with oil….and the distributing them as needed in the house.

Tonight, we have a change in TIME…….  24th October the last day under British Summer Time.  Tomorrow we are back to Greenwich Meantime.

As we gain on hour overnight, as we ‘put our clocks back’ by one hour….  you could say that time, for a short while, stands still.

So, remember to change your watch and also….

A Real Treat……

Whilst we all try to manage the best we can in these strange times in which we live, it is the little things that seem to matter the most.

One of the things we have missed the most, is being able to see our Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren growing up.

So a surprise visit from Great Granddaughter Esmee was a real treat.  With visits being so far apart it is always a surprise to see just how fast they grow.

It was only a short visit but created more memories to cherish…

In these difficult times, memories are so important.

For the sake of everyone…..
