Another dip into my Raphael Tuck Collection of Postcards. This time it is selection published circa 1905 by Tucks. Part of what they described as Wide- Wide- World Series, designed to show people, other parts of the World, that were perhaps beyond their own reach.
It was at a time when colour print was still in its infancy for low cost publications. This series was printed at the companies Bavarian Works in Chromotype process.
This collection is called “The Gorgeous East”. It was a Limited Edition in their Connoisseur Series and once again to increase its cashe, was presented in a Card Case with Silver Embossing …

As was Tucks style, they Commissioned an established Artist of the period. The illustrations are the work of Joseph Finnemore (1860-1939). All 6 cards in this series conveyed the mystic of a far off land, and no doubt with a degree of Artistic License.

I guess the Embossed Presentation Case was designed to encourage collectors, but even if you were to post one of these cards, there was the thoughtful inclusion of Blotting Paper’ to dry the wet ink from your pen after penning your message (remember Ball Point Pens had yet to be invented.)

I hope you like this little bit of nostalgia. A little piece of history.
Back to the reality of our daily life…. and whatever you are planning….
as always….

Great colors. I wonder if the artist actually visited India or if the scenes are pure imagination.
