Now so very quiet…. Sunderland Point, on the Estuary of the River Lune wheres it enters Morecambe Bay, Lancashire. An exposed location surrounded by Saltmarshes and cut of from the mainland at high tide.
But it was not always so quiet. Hard for todays visitors to believe, that this diminutive coastal ‘hamlet’ was once a very busy and prosperous Ports along the west coast of England .
No quay side harbour here… but it was the time when boats were more flat bottomed, arrived at high tide, then as the water receded they sat on the shore allowing horse drawn carts to draw alongside tom load and unload.
Apart from the the shipping trade, it also had a small ship building background…. heydays were late 1680’s till 1720ad. Major investments and more modern facilities elsewhere brought about its economic demise.
Today it provides a step back in time with just hints of a long gone ere.

I swear that if you stand quietly here on the quayside, you can hear the ghostly clip-clop and rattle of horse and carts… add todays call of the seagulls and you are transported momentarily back in time.
Enjoy your day in the here and now… but as always….
