Moody Monday..

Ferry to Skye

Waiting for the Skye Ferry

I thought this memory might fit the Moody Monday brief.  Yes, the image is in colour… it is a scan from a very old Perutz 35mm slide.  I guess it was either 1959 or 1960.  What I can confirm is that I and two climbing friends were travelling in that Morris Minor Pickup Van.  We had ‘enjoyed‘ 4 days of heavy rains in the Torridon mountains further north in Scotland. Even though we had achieved several summits, we had had enough of the rains and wet clothes and soggy tent… which all suggested that  we move on.  We were definitely feeling moody., so indeed it was best to make a move!

The forecast suggested that Skye was due some sunny weather, so here we are waiting for the Skye Ferry.

In those days, the Skye Bridge was still very much a pipe dream, the drive on -drive off ferry at the Kyle of Lochalsh, the only viable route from mainland Scotland to the Isle of Skye.  The long waits  in line was something  all travellers had to endure, it was slow. Each line of vehicles represented one ferry load. So never to waste a moment, we took advantage of the wait to ‘start’ to dry our clothes.

Once across the Kyle Akin and onto Skye the weather improved dramatically.  Burning bright sunshine….. so at the first opportunity we paused our onward journey to the Cuillin mountains, to spread our cloths out on the heather to dry and make a well earned brew….. and I admit a short nap.

As for the rest of the week, Skye was at its best, the mountains beckoned.

A Moody start but making another collections of memories.

Today, travellers speed, without delay, over the ‘Bridge to Skye’….. they don’t know what they are missing 🙂

Enjoy this new week…. and as always….
