Flashback to 1963…

Covering the country for Valentines of Dundee, it wasn’t always seaside, countryside, Castle and Staley Homes, but also Cites and new infrastructure.

The composite Postcard was always one of the best sellers and this one of Manchester City Centre was one.

It was also an opportunity for Cities to show off their best side., Councils keen to help.  Piccadilly Gardens Manchester was also much more than Floral Gardens, a place to relax but was also the Cities Bus Station.

In 1963 Manchester Airport was also moving up in the aviation world as it also marked the first Transatlantic flights, from Manchester, to the USA.  Originally know as Ringway Airport (RAF Ringway during the war years) it was making a big step forward and also keen to promote itself….

Passenger facilities were, for 1963, vastly improved, heralding in the style of Departure Lounges we now take so much for granted.

Postcards were a great visual means of communicating, sales were big numbers, postage was minimal compared to today… I guess you could say the forerunner Social Media.  Just for those who have a photographic interest, all were shot on Kodak Ektachrome sheet film with a speed of ISO 10, yes 10.  These Postcards are also first proofs.

I hope these little flash backs have proved interesting.

As always….
