Connel Bridge, Loch Etive narrows… near Oban, Scotland
Certainly not a bridge too far… but still a bridge with an important evolving story.
Originally built to carry a railway link from Ballachulish to Oban, where it could join the wider Scottish railway links. Opened in 1903 operated as rail only bridge till 1914, when a road carriageway was added for the new fangled motor cars, running alongside the railway. Time moves along and the innovative railway line became, like many others, declared un-economic and closed.
So, in 1966 the Bridge was converted for Road Traffic only. Single file only and traffic lights to control; directional flow.
The turbulent waters below are known as the Falls of Lora. Boat passage is only possible at hightide and a skilled captain. Prior to the Bridge, crossing the narrows was done by ferry… a short crossing but records would say it was an exhilarating ride.
On Land or Sea… as always….
