Geometric Construction Square…

Ribblehead Viaduct, Yorkshire

Originally named Batty Moss Viaduct, now Ribblehead is a Grade II listed building.  Construction started in 1869 and completed  in 1874.  Its isolated location on difficult terrain demanded a large workforce of over 2300 men, lodged, many with their families, in a shanty village built alongside the construction site…. over 100 lost their lives.

Construction is of block Limestone with the distinctive arches in Red Brick. It was built to link several of central England Railways lines with Scotland at Carlisle to complete a vital transport link in the expanding Victorian industrial economy.

  1. an extraordinary and beautiful piece of railway architecture, but I hadn’t realised this iconic build had such a high fatality rate. That’s awful

    1. That is the minimum estimate and doesn’t take account of the women and children that lived in the shanty town that was built for the workers. members of these families also died, If I understand and remember correctly their deaths were from disease and child birth. High price to pay and I guess not an unusual occurrence
