Queen Victoria loved Braemar and the Dee Valley, so much so she had a Castle built for her holidays, we know it as Balmoral.
By all accounts Queen Victoria loved to explore the wild forested countryside that lined the Dee, Pony treks and outings to include a picnic. One spot was a favourite for such excursions, loved so much that she had a Cottage built.
This is the cottage. Located in the Mar Forest near to a spot known as the Punch Bowl just above the Linn of Quoich where the river joins the Dee.
A well chosen place for a Royal Tea Room. It is that Royal Queen Victoria connection that created Royal Deeside, which is still enjoying Royal patronage.
Quite a place for a picnic. The cottage is now boarded up, so our picnic was on the grassy banks of the River Quoich…. still a great place to pause.
On the move, or taking time out… as always…..

Lovely spot, but that poor cottage looks to have some hefty cracks in it….
