Once upon a Time it was so Busy

On a small Scottish Island, a row of Cottages stand silent waiting for the next inflow of Holiday Visitors. Even then it will not match the hustle and bustle of the past.

This is only one of several rows of identical cottages.   There streets invariable run down to the sea. Not romantic Fishermen’s cottages but those of Slate Quarry workers.  Indeed it was part of the Scottish prosperous Slate Quarry Industry, an industry centred on a number of Island off the Argyll Coast.  The sea itself being key for distribution across the UK, but also internationally.

Today, like others across these small islands, they look rather like model villages, crisp clean and very quiet…..  a far cry from the noise, dirt and hard labour of the Quarrymen.

Progress it is true…. but not sure the final story in the history of these cottages, all part of Scotland Industrial History has yet been told.

An un-natural quiet cloaks these villages
