Thoughtful Thursday….

Ribble-Head087

Ribblehead Viaduct, Yorkshire

Built between 1869 and opened to passenger trains in 1876, Ribblehead Viaduct crosses Batty Moss.  During its construction over 2300 men were employed, of which at least 100 lost their lives. The Viaduct is a Grade 2 listed building.  Built for  the Settle- Carlisle Railway, the rail link and bridge were threatened with closure in the 1980’s…. but Public pressure and a major campaign eventually brought about a change of heart.  Since then trains, at times Steam Trains, use the Viaduct on a daily basis.

Part of the attraction of the viaduct is its relatively isolated location. Often photographed in all weathers by many…. my own regret is that I have failed to get my visits to coincide with the Train Timetables, so no action pics from me.

There will, I hope be another opportunity.
