The aptly named Day Lilly is big, bold and very brassy. Its antenna like stamens tipped with loads of pollen sway in the breeze as if saying to the bees…. ‘come and get me whilst you can, I’m loaded but only here for today’. It is a sad fact that tomorrow the flower head will have dried and shrivelled ready to drop into the undergrowth. The other sad fact is, that despite keeping a watchful eye on the flowers, the Bees seem to buzz about but few actually remove any pollen. All that effort to give such a short span of pleasure and on top of all that the bees treat it with disdain!
Thankfully we have several large clumps of these Lilies….so we know, for a few weeks at least, that another bloom will be along tomorrow.
