Brockhampton Manor House, Herefordshire
John Doubleton built Brockhampton Manor House in 1425. Materials, mainly Oak timber, are from his extensive Estate and Farm that surrounded the chosen location. It comprises a moat and a gatehouse with portcullis… maybe he did have defence in mind.

For many years Brockhampton Manor House was his family home. The farm was very productive and he and successive generations, lived in this rather special house. It really is worth taking a look inside…

As mentioned the Estate thrived, everything from Timber from the woodlands, arable crops from the fertile Herefordshire valley and of course cattle. The family used their prosperity to build a ‘new’ 18th century, Georgian style Brockhampton Manor House on higher ground near to the original Manor House.
The original House soon became known as the Lower Manor House.
For years Senior Estate workers lived in the Lower Manor. Sadly the Lower Manor House did deteriorate,. But in the Victorian era instructions were given for the House to be restored…. with the stipulation that, where ever possible, only estate materials should be used. The house continued to be used and as those with eagle eyes will spot, interiors improvements were made to some rooms… but the overall historic look was maintained.

Today Lower Brockhampton Manor is cared for by the National Trust. Both the house and estate are well worth exploring…. a Herefordshire Gem.
No matter where you are today…. as always….
