Sunderland Point, The Lune Estuary, Lancashire
Regular viewers of British TV may well recognise the scene above. It has featured in Period Costume Dramas thru to Crime Dramas… certainly a peaceful location for filming.
But Sunderland Point, which consist of about 30 houses and a farm, located at the end of an isolated shingle spit, a spit that reaches out into Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea and washed by the tidal water of the River Lune Estuary.
It was once a very busy port in the 17th century and earlier. Ship building, fishing and most importantly cargo, much of it from colonial sources.
Perhaps its success was its downfall. Progress and economics were to see a Dock built on the opposite bank of the Lune. Cargo off loaded could be shipped inland much quicker by avoiding a long cart drive along the estuary. Lancaster, where most of the Traders were based also wanted a slice of the action and another port (or docks) were created up river in Lancaster… access to these of course were restricted by the tidal levels of the Lune.
A rich history, a location that still today retains its historic atmosphere. Surrounded by River, Sea and Salt march it is a great place to explore, a place so full of nature, a bird lovers paradise. But if visiting, beware…. check the tide tables as the approach causeway is submerged at hide tide.
Wherever you are….
