Old John’s Tower
Bradgate Deer Park, Leicestershire was once the estate of the The Earls of Smaford (The Grey Family) It was George Grey, the 5th Earl who had this Tower constructed at nearly 700ft. the highest point of his estate. It dates to 1784 and it is often called a ‘Folly’ or fake ruin. It did though have a practical use. The Earl used it as an observation point to watch his horses exercising below. It was so useful that a stable block was also built near by (though I couldn’t trace its location). Later it became a meeting and refreshment point for Hunting Parties.
Its unique shape now resemble a ‘Toby Jug’ a local landmark and base for tours of the Parkland in the summer months.
I do known that early map of 1754, showed a Windmill on this hill.
What I can not tell you is why it is called Old John…. many local stories or myths have been expressed but none are conclusively positive… so I guess it is still a mystery. Just a great local Landmark.
