An Ancient Time Piece
Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Cumbria
This is just a small part of the Megalithic* Stone Circle nestling in the shadow of some of the Lake Districts highest mountains (Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Blencathra).
Today it is both a dramatic and a romantic setting. To wander through the stones is a privilege that leaves you with a mystical tingle of treading where ancient man has trod before you.
Why are they here…well to be truthful there are so many theories that are common to the great many Stone Circles across the UK. It is suggested that they are simply Meeting Places for those ancient travellers, some suggest they had a more important role and were what you would describe today as Market Places. Many like here at Castlerigg there indications of burials whilst others claim Druid and other Religious connections.
There is one common link between many of the theories and that is that they are an ancient “Time Piece” indicating the passing of the seasons, movement of the sun and the moon. This would require the Circles (or stones) to be precisely placed. There are even theories that they are geographically linked with other circles across the countryside and much talk of Lay Lines as the mapping tool used to place and then locate the circles.
So Castlerigg is a sign of the passage of time (0ver 4000 years) and possibly of a measure of passing time.
