Well the old year is going out fighting…..Strong winds have caused some damage in the woods but in truth it could have been so much worse; and some parts of the U.K. have indeed come off much worse. The forecast is for more to come so we will have to wait and see. Despite recent rains it is mainly surface water, deeper down the soils are still dry which can be seen on this root ball of one fallen tree….
It is the Silver Birch that seem to have come off worse, but to be fair this section of woodland should have been thinned some time ago. So nature has taken matters into its own hands…..
Now I know that New Year approaches and some folk like a nip of warming liquor, but if they must indulge in the woods, I do wish they would take their own empties away with them……

I heard on the television news, there was a terrible weather in there, how damaged. I hope and wish not going on… I can see too in your photographs. How sad… Thank you dear David, Happy New Year, love, nia

We had a real bad ice storm back in 1998 which destroyed many tree’s here in New England, Maine. The tree’s in the woods still til this day are very dangerous to anyone that ventures or works in the woods. The limbs hanging are called widow makers. Looks like from the your pictures the woods are somewhat similar.

Seeing the beautiful silver birch lying down, I feel a bit like Idéfix, the little dog belonging to the Gall Warrior Obelix. Yep – the fat one on the blue and white striped trousers. Idéfix cried over each and every tree that was yanked out of the ground, or felled.
But, when this tree is allowed to remain where it has fallen, it will become host a lot of animals and plants. And in the end be nutricion for all that lives in that area. How beautiful Mother Nature works.
Well, as long as mankind will take their rubbish home with them…
No chance for a quick message tomorrow. I will be away for the New Years Eve and will not think of computers. I would love to wish all of you a wonderful New Years Eve and for 2014 health and happiness. Blessed Be all of you.

The old ones will fall; it’s all part of the cycle. As for those who leave their litter around, I’ve never been able to understand their lack of responsibility or concern. Whenever I’m hiking, anywhere in the world, I always carry a bag that I use to pick up after less sensitive fools.
