Silent Sunday….So Off to Church

Bolton-Abbey

Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire

A winters day in Wharfedale, North Yorkshire.  Some years since we last visited… But the evocative mood of a late winters afternoon standing on the banks of a swift flowing River Wharf gazing across to the ruins of this 12century Augustinian Monastery still lingers on.  It was certainly cold but we left with a warm feeling.

(Bolton Abbey is part of the Duke of Devonshire’s Estate whom have their seat of residence at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire)

  1. Been there!! And we started this tour on that beautiful May day in Richmond. Went to see Easby Abby and the Church of the Holy Trinity (had to look it up again: http://www.richmond.org/guide/ ) and from there via Harrogate for lunch (no, not at Betty’s!! Far too expensive and far too busy also. We found a pub lunch in a small side street and it was superb) and after luch to Bolton Abbey. From there via Ayesgarth back to Richmond. We did several tours there in 1982 when both Ron and Betty were young and enjoying their start as pensioners. And I was in my thirdtees. I am to be 69 this summer. But 1982 was the year I met them. Warm memories.
I love noth abbeys because of the atmosphere. There is still this serene atmosphere of piece and tranquility even with all the visitors.

      1. Aye… Back in 1982 there weren’t as many as now, I was told a few years ago. That was when my friend and her neighbour and I went for a long drive through Yorkshire. We slept at friends of her in Knaresborough. That was a my last time in the Dales. They remain breathtaking but my, the traffic. Like Rod said: Traffic is murder here… It was very busy. I am gratefull having seen most of it when there weren’t that many tourists. Yess… I am one too. 🙂

        1. Same here. :)) But Yorkshire still is ‘Gods own Country’ as James Herriot once said (I think). Hopefully this year I will be able to visit Dilston Physic Gardens. Means the ferry from IJmuiden (Amsterdam) to Newcastle. I do wish to visit the city and the bridges there. After Dilston I want to travel by train further via York to Scarborough and change for the train to Hull. Get out at Filey for B&B. Next day I will visit Hunmanby again. Bring seeds that I will buy at Dilston and sow along the road where the ashes of my friends were scattered: Ron & Betty Coles. Of course, I will also visit Spring Cafe and meet several old friends of Bettys. Then take the bus from Hunmanby to Hull and from there back home. I am saving money as this will be an expensive round trip for me. But I like to see a wee bit ot Northumbria.
That is one I can strike of my list…
