The Stable Block…. Once a Way of Life

DOI_3573qqq

Glowing in the September sunshine, the Stable Block at Calke Abbey, Derbyshire, has to be one of my favourite places. It hasn’t been used for a great many years, used for its original purpose that is. Today it is often packed with visitors… but despite those crowds all I can hear are the ghosts of the past.

Horses, farriers harnessing, blacksmiths preparing new shoes, coachmen readying carriages and pony traps, whilst other ‘muck out’ the stable. Walk into the stables and those sounds and smells all come flooding into my head.

Hard to visualise just how busy this was, the centre of estate life.
