Sunday…. An Opportunity we missed

Glastonbury Abbey, Somerset.

Strange how things work out.  We lived for many years, not many miles away from Glastonbury, near enough for an afternoon visit.  But we never made it.

Then after an even longer period away we visited the area on holiday.  We were in the area for two weeks and it was a scorcher, blue skies and sunshine. That is, till the day we had free to make the long overdue visit….. We arrived with heavy overcast skies and rain making the occasional appearance. Not the best of conditions for photographing the visit…. but best make the most of the opportunity.

Glastonbury was originally a monastery.  First established in the 8th century, expanded in the 10th… then following a fire in 1184 had to be rebuilt.. By the 14th century Glastonbury’s power and of course its wealth was recognised as one of the most prosperous and influential in England.

Power and Religion always get in the way of longevity and Glastonbury was soon singled out by King Henry VIII as part of his Dissolution of Monasteries.  Destruction followed.

The Glastonbury story also had a bloody end.  The Abbot Richard Whything was accused of being a traitor, taken, hung, then drawn and quartered in 1538 on Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury is on the list to return to… when the weather is more favourable.

(I should add that the following day was another summer scorcher, even refreshed after the previous days rain…. but we were then many miles away. )

Whatever your weather this Sunday… enjoy and….
