Queenstown or Cobh… Titanic’s Last Port
123 passengers joined the Titanic here at Queenstown on the 11th April, 1912…. embarking on Titanic’s tragic voyage. Many had made a last visit to St. Colemans Cathedral that dominates the skyline….. maybe their final views of their home country. That view would have been a little different as the Spire was added to the already tall tower a few years later.
As for the name change. Well the port in this wide, but sheltered bay, was once a major Navel Base, known as Cove of Cork or simply Cove. The name changed following a visit by Queen Victoria to Queenstown. Queenstown is the name that was on Titanic’s itinerary and on all the Passengers boarding Passes (replica below).
It is recorded that of the 123 passengers who boarded at Queenstown, 44 survived the disaster.
History also tells us that another name change occurred in 1920, during the Irish War of Independence… to Cobh
Today a great Tourist Destination and lots to explore. The Cathedral is as fabulous, inside, as it from afar….. and of course there is a Titanic Exhibition.

Nor had I…. apart from the Titanic connection and museum, the town itself is colourful, friendly and great to explore. We booked a local guide and he took 6 of us on a tour of the town, he brought to life stories of its history (other than Titanic) and told very much as a local who had lived there all his life. The setting in this wide bay is perfect. I guess the Cathedral, which dominates the town is a must for all visitors, I certainly found it interesting. I have Cobh on the list to revisit.

Sad history but colorful buildings. Just FYI, your link on Debbie’s blog isn’t clickable, so you may want to try again so more people come here.
