Our Sami Guide
A memory, from this time in 2019, popped up in my ‘reminders’ of a visit to northern Norway.
We spent a long morning with a Sami family, near to Sortland, Vesteralen. It was a fabulous visit made all the more enjoyable by our Host and Guide for the visit. Sami are famous for their Reindeer, and yes we did see some of their herd…. but it was the culture and nomadic life that was so impressive. The nomadic life is perhaps best understood when you realise that their Sami roots are spread wide…. “Sápmi, a region spanning across northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia“… a culture that crosses many countries boundaries. As the Sami communities embrace a sustainable life style, it probably explains the fact that it is one of our oldest cultures.
They also know the importance of my by-line…

i should have added that their colourful national dress is not for tourists, but for their everyday life. In the northern Norwegian towns and cities it contrasted with the European fashions. The Sami, men, women and children in the coourful traditional clothes.
