Arbroath Signal Tower..

Staying on the Scottish Coast for todays blog.  This time its the East Coast at the Fishing village of Arbroath.
This stylish Signal Tower was the shore station for Bell Rock Lighthouse, the oldest off shore lighthouse still surviving and still in service.  Bell Rock was built between 1807 an 1810.  Located some 11 miles offshore, guarding the mouth of the Tay Estuary.  As such it needed a shore base for supplies, communication and support.
Arbroath Signal Tower was that base.. Bell Rock, like other lighthouse arround the coast, is now fully automatic. But the Signal Tower was not made redundant … but repurposed as a Museum.  It is a few years since I had an enjoyable and informative visit….. I do hope that despite all the economic cuts to our historical centres and culture, that Arbroath Signal Tower is still hosting visitors.
I think tomorrow I will take you a little further north, but still on Scotlands East Coast
Wherever you are  today, enjoy….and …
