” Carefully Storing the Winters Fuel Supply “
The Peat Stack, a crofting essential. Here on the Shetland Isles, Peat is still a major element in the fuel supply. Dug carefully in a long established Crofting tradition, peat is dried and then carefully stacked and stored for the winter months… I did say Crofting tradition, but evidence suggests that the use of Peat, on these Island goes back to the very earliest inhabitants… heating, cooking and building.

Looks very agrarian despite the modern covering. What a long tradition of peat, for pete’s sake. ๐

Yep, not as often as I would like. Coastline, Landscape all littered with history back to the earliest times plus the people and a Scandinavian influence. And contrary to the TV Series ‘Shetland’ I haven’t witnessed any murders ๐ It is a fabulous group of unique islands.

Yep, an evocative aroma. Now on mainland UK we dont even get the smell of wood smoke…a lot of redundant log burnering stoves. ๐
