Today, Sunday 8th November is the day for the National Remembrance Commemorations. At 11am this morning there will be a 2 minute Silence followed by a Military Parade at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London. Over 10, 000 Veterans plus many more who supported our Forces will march past. Elsewhere across the UK Ceremonies of Remembrance will take place…some in Cathedrals and Churches, other at War Memorials in local communities…no matter where, all have the same theme, to Remember and to never forget the sacrifices of so many.
The tiny and lonely Scottish Church above, has always been for me a very poignant reminder of the sacrifices so many made in hostilities. This is Syre Kirk, it is located in remote Strathnaver, Northern Highlands of Scotland. The Kirk served, and still does serve, a very small community of Crofts spread over a wide area. Standing proud beside the Kirk is a War Memorial, it is inscribed with the names of those who went to war and never return home. Reading the names, you realise just how big an impact their loss was, not just to their families but in the decimation of such a small and lonely Highland Community. I was also reminded, that for many of the very young men, it was the first time they had left their Communities, plunged into the horrors of war …. and for so many never to return.
Syre Kirk is not unique, there are many smaller War Memorials across the UK, away from the glare of the Media and dignitaries, there is no doubt, that today small groups will gather at each… to Remember.
A Poignant day… so maybe well worth refreshing our usual byline….
Please Remember ….
Stay Safe …. Be Kind…. Look After Each Other
