The Old Stables, Milldale, Derbyshire
(Now an Information Barn)
My Mother, and I expect her Mother, had a saying when looking at most things new, she would say in a sarcastic voice…. “They don’t make them like they used to”. I suspect she was right. Look arround Derbyshire and you will find many a stone built Barns, Farm Outbuildings and Stables. Most are many hundred’s of years old and despite their bleak and exposed locations have stood the test of time. True some have fallen into ruin but many many more are in use today. Yet these were utility buildings, not posh residences, and were built with skill, craft and pride…..I suspect that todays modern build utilities will not stand the same test of time and weather.
The Stables above, within its own pasture, stands on the banks of the River Dove at Milldale, has had some T.L.C. over the years. But that was only administered as it was basically a sound structure. It has been given a new lease on life and is now an Information Barn, a source of local history and information for those exploring the countryside. It is also a great shelter when the weather turns but also an equally good spot for a Pic Nick!
Access to the Hay Store above the stable is via these equally as well made stone steps. Utility as the one–time Stables and Steps may well have been, but they are full of simple character and have stood the most significant test of all…that of Time!
And remember Mum’s always knows best….they don’t make them like they used to.
