It is certainly makes a big bold statement, of the importance of the historic Gottorf Castle, to the Dukes of Schleswig. Built around 1864 it was indeed a powerful visual statement of power.

The majestic frontage also masks what hides behind. Indeed it masks much earlier Castles and Palaces, built in stages and differing styles, by many generations, from the very first foundations in 1161 …

Built abutting the ‘new’ Palace it is an eclectic and intriguing mix of styles of architecture…. stand in the inner courtyard can be a little mesmerising.
But what these buildings also hide is an equally intriguing mix.
There is of course a Chapel, but also an Art Gallery and a Museum… all with strong secular stories…. here is a little peak….

What is that saying…“Never Judge a Book by its Cover”….. Schloss Gottorf hides much behind its impressive cover.
