Most visitors to Scotland are there to enjoy the unique scenery… a mix of mountain, sea, rivers and idyllic highland villages… for the most part peaceful.
Dotted along the coastline, apart from the many small Fishing Ports and Harbors, you will soon spot timbers standing tall in the waters.
These too were once important ‘harbors’. constructed near local industrial locations on and arround the many islands… this one is on the Isle of Luing. It was constructed to enable slate quarried on the island to be shipped by visiting vessels to destinations around the world.
Luing was just one of many islands along the West Coast of Scotland that thrived on the Slate industry. These ad hoc harbors, reaching out in the deep water, remind you that these now quiet locations were once busy industrial center’s. Times change so quickly… but the clues remain.
Wherever you are today… always….
