Wenlock Priory, Much Wenlock, Shropshire
Built on an earlier Cluniac House of 1079, Wenlock Priory was built in the 12th century. Sometimes referred to as St. Milburgars’ Priory. Remains, dating back to the 7th century, that are believed to be that St. Milburgar were discovered during the construction of the Priory.
Not sure just when construction was completed for you can see evidence in the intricate stone work of many modifications…
Today, what remains of the Priory is only a small fraction of the original estate. But for visitors it is interesting to trace the outlines that remain and gain an impression of the Priories once importance.
If visiting be prepared to share the space with lots of other visitors….. Wenlock Priory is just one of many locations in this part of Shropshire that rightly attract visitors. Wenlock Edge, Buildwas, Ludlow town and its Castle, Ironbridge Gorge, The Long Mynd and then of course, the town of Much Wenlock itself .
