Rosebay Willowherb…
There I was, no camera just the phone, trying to capture this stand of Rosebay Willowherb…when a deep voice behind we said….”What are you photographing THEM for, they are only weeds“
The edges of our fields and the sides of the hedges along the lanes are coming to life with lots of wildflowers and herbs. Recent rains followed by hot humid weather seems to have given them all a much needed spurt of vigorous life. Rosebay Willowherb are one such wild flower, taller than most and developing a colourful flower spike of ‘punk’ pink.
So Rosebay Willowherb may not grace your garden but they are far from being a weed, it is in its own habitat and enjoying its life whilst bring much needed nectar for Bees and Insects that seem to love them.
Not sure who said it…”A weed is a flower in the wrong place”…… well these are most certainly in the right place

Fireweed as the Americans call it is perhaps a world wide herb….. bold, productive but at the same time delicate flowers.

Our thistle is the same…beautiful when in full bloom, but designated a noxious weed to be eradicated.
