Yesterday the weather teased us…

Mill Stone on Hathersage Moor

Millstone, Hathersage Moor, Derbyshire

Yesterday we enjoyed a real Spring day full of sunshine and warmth.  Today, Sunday the weather is reaping is revenge and returned to the dull days of March and April.  The positive view is that the sun is up there somewhere, but not yet ready to play, and it is also dry.  Forward forecast is that it is Wednesday when we may just see Spring return.

The Millstone above is just one of many that can be found scattered along this Derbyshire moorland edge.  These abandoned Millstones are a reminder of when the grinding stones were carved by hand, out here in all weathers, from gritstone boulders that where deemed to be of suitable size and shape.  This one is incomplete like many others.  The manufacturing process suddenly changed and cutting by hand stopped overnight.  They were carved in many sizes, this one is typical and measures some 3ft across…so no mean feat of skill and energy was needed by the stonemasons.

Nor would I imagine would they be able to stand and gaze at the scenery as the sun went down at the end of a working day.
