The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford
Christopher Wren (later Sir) created the Sheldonian Theatre as his first major architectural projects. It is a fabulous building and inside you can detect the very Roman influence under a domed roof….perhaps that dome was to become his trademark.
It is though the giant Roman style heads, each on its own pillar, that surround the front of the Sheldonian that have always ‘caught’ my eye. Each head has very strong positive eyes…. all seeing, even if sculptured in stone.
Today in Oxford, they possibly have much more to see than at any other time in the past centuries, standing in watchful guard surveying the comings and goings along Oxfords Broad Street…
I bet they could tell a few stories…… best not ask!
