Silent Sunday…. An Island Kirk

Kilchattan Kirk, Isle of Luing, Firth of Lorn, Scotland

There is very little left of Kilchattan Kirk here on Luing, one of the Easdale Slate Island in the Firth of Lorn, Argyll and Bute.  The Kirk may only be a shadow of its former self but being surrounded by numerous graves and their marker stones, it tells a story of the island history… Crofters, Sailors and Quarrymen….  perhaps too many of the later.

As cemeteries go, the setting is both peaceful and idyllic.

A peace that was not present when these island quarries where in full swing supplying slate to be shipped across the world. For the quarry workers it was a hard and dangerous life, accidents numerous, as testified by reading the stories on the grave markers.

The Isle of Luing is indeed a tranquil and beautiful location here on the Scottish West Coast.  Whitewashed Crofters and Quarry Workers Cottages adding to the deception for today’s visitors.  Many of these cottages now ‘Holiday Lets’
