A Detail of Seville….

Lots of memories of Andalusia’s Capital, Seville. A very memorable City. But it was various details that lingered alongside the memories.  Memories of the heat, the hustle and bustle of friendly cheerful people and an overall red/ochre colour to paint, plaster and architecture.

The most memorable for me was the detail incorporated into the architecture, the detail being the decorated ceramic tiles .

The ones above form a distinctive decorative addition to the stunning ‘Plaza de Espana’.  Not one of the oldest buildings in Seville, being built in1928/29, as the centre piece for an  International Spanish Exhibition.

Ceramic tile decoration is nothing new to Seville. It is a decor style that has withstood the test of time.  The Royal Palace of Alcazar that dates back to the 1200’s made use of ceramic decorations and an influence that spread….   from major rooms within the Palace, to corridors and gardens and of course across the City…. even much of the stone decor is carved to replicate the traditional designs.

But of course no visit to Seville or Andalusia is complete without mention of the Horses….. as much a trademark of Andalusia as any landmark…
