Thoughtful Thursday… Why go round ?

Dry-Stne-Wall

Why go round… when you can go over?

In Derbyshire, and several other Limestone counties across England, ‘Dry Stone Walls’ are a major feature of the countryside.  Walls that have defined farm and community boundaries for centuries…. feats of a craft skill that has been handed down from generation to generation.

As for the name ‘Dry’ stone wall… well dry because no mortar or cement or binding material was used in the construction….. just a painstaking jigsaw puzzle, finding matching stones and slipping them together.  Usually these walls are a double thickness with a core filled with rubble.

Whilst they followed the contours of often very hilly ground, more often than not, should an obstacle get in the way of the defined boundary line … well you just went over it  (saved some materials too).

Apart from being a practical landscape feature that has, over the centuries, stood the test of time…. they have also proved ideal habitat for small mammals and birds plus a host of insects, all safe and dry within the cracks and core.

This Thursday and everyday…..  always….

    1. Me to… someone once said to me whilst admiring an open country view that walls made it look as if you were looking at the contour lines on an Ordinance Survey map. An exaggeration but not that far from the truth 😃

  1. I really admire stone walls. Where I live, it was considered frontier in colonial times, so there aren’t many old stone walls. But there are more out east in our state, many built during that time of history.
