A row of Derbyshire Mill Workers Cottages, today much sort after homes.
.But for many these terraced houses were both home and work. Note the top floor, the windows are shorter than the lower levels. In many of these Mill Cottages that top floor was an long open space running the length of the terrace. It was shared work space, often with weaving looms. I am told that whilst this was the key work space in these houses, other members of the family, also worked in the lower levels. It was hand skilled labour, usually finishing tasks, which was also referred to as ‘Piece Work’.
This really was living on the job.
At work or play today…. as always….
