Arbroath Abbey, in the Royal Burgh of Arbroath, Angus, Scotland
Not a great deal remains of this once important Scottish Abbey, but enough to endorse its original size and importance. In Scottish History, Arbroath Abbey was were, in 1320 the “Declaration of Independence” was proclaimed….. a quest for independence that still continues to achieve today.
King William The Lion, King of the Scots, was much attached to the Abbey. Born in 1142, he reigned from 1165 to 1214, the second longest reign by a Scottish Monarch. There is a simple memorial stone marking, where it is believed, he was laid to rest.
Sadly, like so many of our once important and historic Abbeys, Arbroath fell fowl of Religious rivalry and Political greed and the imposition of outside power.
Arbroath, and its Abbey, is place to highlight on any trip you make to Scotland.. The Abbey is certainly a ruin but none the less, a building and legacy to out rival many of the Scottish Places and Castles.
Sunday, and a day of rest for many…. but no matter what your plans are… as always….
