On the Bridge to the Cathedral

Stradling the River Derwent in Derby is this ‘swing bridge’….  it is a relatively new addition to the river crossing designed for cycles and walkers only.

Not sure why it is a swing bridge, just a vanity project by the Council.  No large vessels or masted yachts navigate this part of the Derwent and haven’t done for over 200 years.  The fact that the bridge is able to swing is absolutely pointless, as within 200 metres in either direction are historic stone bridges, with arches that are as low if not even lower to the water level than this.  Bridges that carry high volumes of Road Traffic.

Aesthetically pleasing true… but functionality low.

  1. We have a strange Council (no matter the colour of the politics they all do the same here)…they have little respect of heritage and established culture. The Bull Dozer philosophy is king, developers can come and go and bring their ideas and the Council just says yes please. New builds tend to be as I mentioned vanity projects….. and of course other peoples money opens many doors. Derby was once a proud City and certainly when we moved here 45 years ago we were much impressed…. not sure we would make the same move today. Sad
