The Famous Cork Stone on Stanton Moor, Derbyshire
A local landmark… and obviously not made of Cork, so named ,as from some angles it looks like a bottle cork.
But there is also a myth or if you wish a legend attached to the Cork Stone.
It is suggested that young men should take their intended loved ones to the stone. The Fellow should then climb to the top, declare his undying love for the Lass and then jump off. If he lands safely, intact then the Lass should treat him as a ‘keeper’. But should he fall, injure himself maybe break and arm or leg…. then the lass should walk off and abandon him.
Believe it if you wish, it is a legend several 100 years old.
No matter if you take the challenge or dismiss the notion….

Interesting stone structure and also legend., But I can’t help but think it’s a bit harsh for the gal to walk off and leave her beau lying there all busted up. But isn’t that what happens emotionally? Ha! 😉
