Real Horsepower….

It was a busy Sunday but i managed to squeeze in an hour at the British Heavy Horse Open Day, an annual event at local Croots Farm.  Sadly I missed the awards and grand parade…but still a thrill to see these powerful but also gentle animals

So here is a little flavour of the event…

Thankfully the day was not as hot and humid as the previous week… even so after the show it was still good to find the shade and something to munch….

The various breeds of Heavy Horses were once the agricultural powerhouse of farm and transport….  agriculture was 100% dependent upon ‘horsepower’, each horse a prized and valuable farm asset.

I do have a book written by a Lancashire Farmer, written in 1947, it tells of the farm life after the WW2.  He was witnessing the adoption, by so many of his neighbours of the tractor, once a rarity, but now becoming common place.  As he said they would never catch on….  but I think they did and some early tractors put on their own display….

I real do need to mark the date of next years show in the diary… and give it the time it deserves.

Whatever era you are reflecting upon or just planning for the future…. always …
