In the tiny church of The Holy Cross at Ilam, Staffordshire, can be found this small Chapel, maybe you could call it a mausoleum. Within is this rather fabulous Sculpture.
Created by the Sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey in 1832. It is the evocative tribute to David Pike Watts, one time owner of nearby Ilam Hall and philanthropist. It depicts the Death Bed scene of David Pike Watts surrounded by his daughters who he is blessing.
Sometimes solid stone can create a realism with feeling
