‘ A unique and old Rolls Royce ‘
The Classic Rolls Royce Group, staged a display in Derby to mark its long manufacturing association with the City. Motor vehicle construction moved from Derby many years ago… but the Aero and Space connection goes from strength the strength in the Rolls Royce tradition for quality and innovation.
Of all the RR on display, my favourite is the car known as the Grenadier. Very different in style. Built in 1933 for a Newspaper Baron, then lost but found many years later hidden in a field. Restored and now looking great. With its boat tail and unique style, memories of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang come to mind. Grenadier has no wings but it does have a Merlin Aero engine (built here in Derby) the same engine, with the addition of a supercharger, were used to power Spitfires and Lancaster bombers.

Not the usual Rolls Royce look, but if you wanted to view the style change over the year, there were over 50 spanning the ages from then to now…

fantastic! And abiding memory of mine is being on the hockey pitch at school aged about 13 hearing the Merlin engines above and watching transected as a Spitfire and a Lancaster flew over and all the other girls on the field were yelling get on with playing the game!!
