High, in the Limestone area, on the open Derbyshire Moors can be found Magpie Mine. Today it is easy to forget just how industrialised this area once was. Magpie Mine was a productive Lead Mine and one of the very last to stop production.
But Magpie wasn’t the only Lead mine in the Derbyshire Peak District, the area was literally littered with Lead mines. Not many as substantial as Magpie, most were simple, just a hole in the ground or cliff wall… many were a means of diversification for Farmers… all closely guarded, sometimes a farmhouse built above the mineshaft. Derbyshire Lead industry stretches way back in time. Indeed it was Lead that drew the Romans to the region to plunder the rich resource.
But walking across the Derbyshire Moors and through the Dales you would never know just how many hard working miners once trod the same paths
Have a good day whatever you are doing… and also…

A nice bit of nostalgia, David, but those good old days weren’t so good for everyone, were they? xx
