“The White Feather”…
White is the word nominated for this Sundays Challenge. I have selected a White Feather for the challenge.
A White Feather is a complex item. It has long been a symbol of Spiritual Guidance, Peace, Purity and Hope as well as the presence of Angels….. But during World War 1, it was used as a symbol of Cowardice, men not in Military Uniform were often handed the ‘White Feather’. A very strange juxtaposition
I was once told, way back in my young school days, that White and Black were not colours – stick to the seven colours of the rainbow I was told. Maybe so, but black and white are very dominant colours in our lives. I find it fascinating how strong the links are between colours and emotions. White is so closely linked to peace and purity – very sad, I feel, that these feelings can be interpreted as cowardice.

I will have to revisit the story…all I can rember is a vague memory of the French Foreign Legion 😅

It’s a lovely photo but yes, it does remind me of the way it’s been used as a symbol of cowardice. I think that came from a 1902 novel, The Four Feathers, by A.E.W. Mason. And I remember the book was made into a movie of the same name in 2002.

History tells us it was quite common from the start of WW1… many men were badly treat and mailgned a stigma that lasted long after war finished.
