Old and New Life……

I was reminded of that Christmas Carol ‘The Holy and the Ivy’ when I posted an image of my first Holly berries of the year earlier this week.  The question in my mind was, when do I get to see the first fruits of the season for the Ivy….well the answer was to-day….

Look closer and you will see it is covered with Hover Flies and Bees making a feast of the new nectar.  Elsewhere in the woods fungi were starting to break cover for the autumn adding yet another dimension to the forest floor…..

FungiIt is also the start of the rutting season but all was quiet in in the woods, the Hines were grazing whilst the Stags, like this weary looking Fallow Deer, had obviously had a ‘Hard days Night’ and were taking a breather in the mornings sunshine….

Even in the meadows  life was not any more peaceful for the Cows as the Bull had been given his freedom to sweet talk the heard…..I think this one was whispering in this young ladies ear something along the lines…  ‘of course I will still love you tomorrow’….

But it has been a grand day, if it had been a summers day we would have been very pleased but as it is now October it is a big bonus.  And folk were out in good numbers enjoying the sun and fresh air.  Here at our local National Trust property they were having a very busy day…. a day far better than most this summer season.

Back home in our garden this year continues to throw up unexpected seasonal pleasures.  One of our early flowering Clematis  has decided to produce one very late lone flower head to grace and compliment is withering foliage….

Now, IF the weather forecasters are to be believed, we are in for another good day tomorrow……we wait to see.
