The Big Winding Wheel at Middleton Top, Derbyshire. Originally built in 1829 by the famous Butterley Engineering and Foundry Company.
It was built to haul railway wagons up the 1 in 8 Middleton Incline of the then new Cromford & High Peak Railway. Steam powered and in use until 1963. Now lovingly cared for by a team of volunteers and restored in recent year. It was also converted to run off compressed air to demonstrate the power of the beam engine that turns the wheel ( though recently they did a special ‘In Steam’ weekend ) . Engineering skills that continue to deliver…. though the railway line has long gone – now a walking trail over the White Peak of Derbyshire.
And of course now a WHEEL for Debbie’s One Word Sunday Challenge
