Did It Really Happen… Sunshine and Blue Skies

Saturday 14th February, as promised by the Met Office, we woke to clear blue skies and bright piercing sunshine.  They also told us it wouldnt last more than the day.  So, after weeks and weeks  of wet, dark days  this was truly a bonus and a day not to be wasted.
Hopton Hall and its woodland Snowdrops was the chosen destination…   a venue, to which  I always make two annual visits.  In July for the fabulous Rose Gardens and February, as now for a winter Snowdrop walk. As the day moved along that sun just got brighter, shadows darker but also warmer..well just a little bit warmer.

The Rose Garden is also worth a winter look.  Topiary and Box hedges, all neatly trimmed mark out the Rose beds… the Roses pruned ready for the spring and new growth.

The sunshine appeared to be breath new life to the Lake, not quite mirror still but near enough…

Hopton Hall dates back to the 13th century.  A Manor House that prospered as the then owners were heavily involved in the Lead Mining operation of Derbyshire.  The House , as can be seen in the photographs has been extended in very different styles over the centuries. During the mid 20th century the House has mixed fortunes and did deteriorate.
But good fortune shone on Hopton and a new Private Owner  moved in.  Renovations to the Hall began and it became a home again… but maybe of more importance the woodland began to be cared for and more importantly the Historic Rose Gardens were, over a number of years, brought back to life and their former glory.  For the first time, the Woodland and Gardens were opened to visitors – restricted to February for the Snowdrops and July for the Roses. The story and care of the Hall and Estate continues under another Private owner.  Holiday Homes now a integrated part of the Estate.

Today, Sunday and indeed it is dark, damp and raining once again.. Winter continues.

Well, that was our bonus day… enjoyed it whilst it lasted.
I hope your weekend as been enjoyable.. a new week ahead so as always…
