Monday was better than the forecasters predicted. Calke Abbey, Park and Gardens are a favourite , so seemed the best location to head to for a walk with lots of interest.
As you head towards the gardens you have the Stable block to negotiate, you can reflect on just how busy this estate once was…
But my main destination is the gardens, always interesting and each seasonal change adds variety. Many of us have struggled to keep our summer bedding flourishing this hot summer, and Calke is no different, even the Palms seem to me to show signs of stress.
It is not many weeks ago, on my last visit that I was talking to one of the gardeners. We were discussing the Dahlia Borders… we both felt that the new season growth looked to be slow. A late start maybe…. but boy! the Dahlia have well and truly caught up and offering a great late summer display…
It is Harvest time in the Vegetable Garden. Lots of root crops now gathered in. The Pumpkins, Gourds and Squash are all much in hiding, but maybe a bumper crop to come. The Apples are definitely in abundance, its been a good apple year. Windfalls are free to take, but the best of the crops are available to buy…
It was one of those mornings, a bonus morning, unexpectedly good. The air was fresh, the sun warm but overall a mixed aroma of spring, summer and early autumn… a strange but pleasant experience. 🙂
But time to head back, so down to the Hall… Usually busy so very surprised how few folk were out and about… the don’t know what they have missed

Monday was fabulous, fingers crossed for a good Tuesday… but as always….. wherever you are and whatever the weather…
