Bluebell Time….

The end of April approaches, yet despite the near constant rain and maybe thanks to the occasional sunny Spring day, there are some aspects of our Spring that appear to run to time.

It is the Bluebell season.  The annual race between the Bluebells to swath the woodland floor with their blue flowers, pitted against the trees who are determined to spread their leaf canopy to block out the sun.  The Bluebells always win the short sprint… but the trees always win the marathon.  The looser returns to the bulb from which they come from, building up their energy to return to the battle next year..

Sunshine and Bluebells, a perfect combination for a Derbyshire Spring Woodland walk here in Calke Woods.

But being Calke Woods it wood be impolite not to go and say hello to “The Old Man of Calke”…..  a magnificent ancient Oak.  Dated at over 1100 years old (and that was over 25 years ago). We always like to make sure he has survived the ravages of yet another winter….  and yes his head of new leaf is sprouting well so another year to add to his tally.

Bright warm sunny Spring days have been rare this year…. which made yesterday seem very special.  🙂

Sunday today…. I think I will relax and enjoy the garden. But whatever you are doing…. always….

Please Remember ….
