Darley Mills Complex, Darley Abbey, Derby
Standing above the weir on the River Derwent and catching this mornings early sunshine, are these rather impressive Mill buildings.
1792 was the date the Evans family created Darley Mills. Success followed ad the original mill soon be came just part of a sprawling complex. Success was also financial and the Evans family soon created a village surrounding the mill, School, Village Hall and Church all added. In the later half of the 1900’s the mill closed and fell into disrepair. It was a listed building of historic importance, it was with a good deal of local relief that a visionary restoration project was undertaken. Today it is a complex of multi talented studios, offices, workshops, gyms, mini brewery, bars and restaurants plus a Wedding Venue.
A truly recycled Mill complex, now making it own history. Which is a good job, as the site along with several other Mills situated on the banks of the Derbyshire River Derwent have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The weekend is ahead… enjoy and as always….
